The American Red Cross is proud to have a diverse network of
volunteers that give their time and talent to support our humanitarian
mission to help people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters.
Each month, the West Shore Chapter selects a different volunteer to feature
in our Volunteer Spotlight in an effort to demonstrate the different types of
people who serve their community by volunteering to assist in delivering the many
programs and services offered by the American Red Cross.
Meet Karen Gregaitis, a dedicated West Shore Chapter Volunteer
What brings you to the local area?
As a child I came up here from northern Indiana 2-3 times a year.
This was like a second home to me. In July 1968 I met my husband,
Dick, at Round Lake in Fountain and we have been married since 1969.
After spending 24 years in the Air Force and many moves across the United States
and Europe we chose to call Ludington our home and have been here since July 2004.
What do you do for the West Shore Chapter?
I'm currently the co-manager of Emergency Services which helps recruit, train, and retain
disaster volunteers, and oversees all aspects of disaster services.
Why did you start volunteering for ARC?
While my husband was still on active duty and stationed in Wartsmith Air Force Base in Oscoda, Michigan
the station manager was looking for help in the office. I went in and immediatley was assigned to a single-family fire
and helped with the case work. It made me feel so good to help someone in need so I continued with the required
training and now -- 21 years later I'm still doing what I love -- helping those in need.
What do you like about volunteering for ARC?
It allows me to use my talents and interests and work along side some great volunteers. I'm here being a part
of a great organization because I want to be here and not because I have to be here.
What are some of the best memories about volunteering here?
Just in the short time I've been at this chapter I've seen it grow and blossom. I'm very proud to be
associated with our experienced and new volunteers. This last hurricane season has brought out the best
in our community as we were able to come together and help the mission of the ARC. Clara Barton
would be proud of all of us. But most significantly my deployment to Baton Rough, Lousianna in support
of hurricane Katrina and Rita, left me with memories that will always be unforgettable.
What would you say to someone just starting to volunteer with the ARC?
Considering your interests, talents, and experiences we have a place for you.
Whether you just want to stay and help locally or go on an assignment nationally we will try and
match your skills with our needs. There is a place for you here even if it's not with disaster services --
other areas that may be of interest such as health & safety, service to military members & their families,
blood services and other programs that help our communities.
What are some little known facts about you?
Out of the numerous moves with the military and civilian jobs (16 in all) I have come
to the conclusion that there is no better place to live than Ludington, MI. One other
fact about me is at one of our locations I did the Polar bear swim -- for a T-Shirt....Never again!
