HOLIDAY AND WINTER BLOOD NEEDS
Unseasonably warm weather and an early Thanksgiving make some of us wonder if the holidays have really arrived. So as a reminder that it truly 'tis the season, we're saying yes, they're here . . . and providing some basic points about the ongoing need for blood . . .
. The need for blood never takes a holiday. Hospital patients need blood daily for the treatment of cancer, serious disease, surgeries, and accident and trauma.
. Blood shortages are typical during the winter holidays. People get busy with holiday activities and don't take time to give blood. Snowstorms and cold weather adversely affect donor turnout.
. Conversely, demand for blood can rise with increased roadway and vacation-related accidents.
. You can help. Encourage someone to give the gift of life for the holidays. And make an appointment to donate blood or platelets at a blood drive or donor center near you.
The West Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross is holding the following upcoming blood drive (walk-in donors are welcome):
Tuesday, December 12, 2006 K of C Hall 301 N. Jebavy Dr. Ludington 12 noon. -6 p.m.
To learn about additional blood drives in your area, or to make an appointment to donate blood at an upcoming drive, call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit www.givelife.org . Blood donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good general health.
